“Das abc der Bilder” is the central contribution of the State museums of Berlin to the official year of the humanities 2007. The exhibition creates new perspectives for the function of scripture in the visual media, beginning with the early civilisations up to the 21st century. It is a journey through the world of pictures along the shores of written culture.
An exhibition of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with Humboldt University Berlin on the occasion of the “Jahr der Geisteswissenschaften“.

1 INTERVIEWING

2 SELECTING WORDS

3 MAKING PANELS
4 INSTALLING PANELS
5 COMPLETED
The project always starts with interviewing people. In this time, Takafumi Hara interviewed 16 people who are like the representative persons in Singapore, such as the readers of religious places and nations. Singapore is known for one of the countries where many religions and nations coexist in harmony. For Hara’s project, listening to the voices of people, and developing understanding Singapore is the essential part of his projects.
Hara chooses the phrases he is impressed from the interviews. The project has the role of speaking about the country and thoughts. For that reason, the process of choosing the words needs to consider conditions of the country. (At City Hall Studio)
The 1st September was the opening of Singapore Biennale. Thousands of enthusiastic art fans from all over the world gathered in front of City Hall. The parties and events were held for the first 4 straight days. The first Singapore Biennale opened with celebrating mood.
In the day before the opening, Secretary of Education in Singapore visited to Hara’s work. (At City Hall)
Prime Minister of Singapore showed up in the opening party, The place was filled with exitements.
Since City Hall, in English architectural style, was built in 1929, the building has had a lot of historical events. It is one of the most significant buildings in Singapore. Now, each of the 60 pink boards shown on the front-windows of the building is telling 60 ways of messages.
In fact, there was another project by Hara in this biennale. It was one day workshop held in the residence where many solitary elder people live. --Most of residents migrated into Singapore a long time ago from such as China and India.-- It became a wonderful resident-participation workshop. Hara was working with the residents to draw paintings.
Takafumi Hara did his project in Germany in this April. Soon after it, he flew to Singapore to see sites for 2 days, and quickly went back to Niigata, Japan. Then, he flew back to Germany for the opening, and again to Niigata. These projects in 3 countries have been done in a really tight schedule. He had had the opening of 3 prohects by 5 months after the time of this photo. I can really say that he made it!
